The Chicago Hockey Initiative is thrilled to introduce Matthew, our most recent Microgrant recipient! Matthew is an elementary student from the Northside neighborhood of Uptown and plays youth hockey in the Chicago River Dogs program. The CHI ran into Matthew while volunteering at Hockey On Your Block, so we had the rare pleasure to notify the family in person. Matthew, sporting a great hockey smile, is pictured with his father, Tom.
Matthew wrote eloquently about the game of hockey: “I enjoy meeting new friends, the good feeling I get when I step on the ice and play the sport I love, and the challenge to improve alongside teammates.” What wonderful sentiments! When asked how hockey benefits his son, Tom responded “Working together with people of different faiths, raised in different countries, is a valuable life skill.” We absolutely agree, Tom. Matthew’s teacher, Ms. Spicer, spoke glowingly of Matthew’s classroom presence: “ Matthew is an exemplary student. He is diligent about completing assignments on time and correctly. He regularly participates in class activities and displays positive leadership in the classroom.” Those are some heavy duty compliments, Matthew! It has been a great pleasure to meet you and your family!
